Tips On Storing, Preparing, Cooking And Chicken Roasting Times

chicken roasting timesChicken is one of the most preferred food items that we cook on the grill. And though there are so many variations of chicken barbecue recipes all over the world, the cooking technique is just about the same: flavor ‘em up and grill ‘em perfectly! They are cooked over hot coals either as a whole or in parts. Some are spiced and flavored using rubs. Some are marinated to tenderize the meat. Some are brushed with special barbecue sauces. Some are cooked on a rotisserie and some are well, prepared La Caja China style! So if you are up for a chicken barbecue extravaganza this weekend, read on and get these useful tips!

1. Buy your chickens fresh. If you’re getting your supply from the grocery or specialty shop, make sure that you check on the “Use by” date to guarantee that it won’t spoil in case you’ll cook it for later. Once you get home, store it in the fridge right away instead of letting it sit at room temperature.

2. The packaging of chickens sold in supermarkets is okay for freezing. However, if you want to be sure that it’s stored clean and fresh, you can transfer it to a freezer bag or a freezer-friendly food container. This way, you’ll not only save space but also be certain that it won’t drip and contaminate the food items placed under the freezer.

3. When defrosting your chicken, simply remove it from the freezer and transfer it someplace else in the fridge. This can be done overnight though you should remember that you’ll need about 5 hours to defrost a 454-gram whole chicken. Also take note that defrosting smaller portions (wings, breasts and what-nots) take lesser time.

4. If you want to joint a whole chicken, first get rid of any string on it. Place it on a chopping board with its breast facing upwards and its legs pointed at you. Make sure that your knife is sharp enough to guarantee that you will cut the chicken perfectly. Cut through the skin between the leg part and the breast. Press the leg down flat and cut the joint. Remove the leg carefully and do the same process on the other side. Now turn the chicken so that it’s facing the other way. Look for the ridge at the center of its backside. Cut the breast and detach the wing. Repeat the process on the other side. You can now divide the legs into drumsticks and thighs.

5. Once the meat is clean, you can now apply your favorite rub or soak them in your homemade marinade. You can leave them marinated in the fridge overnight if you want to make them more flavorful.

6. Now when roasting your chicken, it is important that you don’t only have a thermometer but that you also know the recommended cooking time. Chicken roasting times differ depending on its weight and size so you have to be careful not to overcook or undercook it. Here’s a roast calculator that will help you figure out how long you should grill your wings, drumsticks, breasts, fillets and even whole chickens.
